The GLUCKSMAN Little Interview

Every month we ask the same set of questions to someone collaborating with us. Over the last two years, we have interviewed diverse members of the Glucksman community - artists, academics, staff members, guests, audiences and workshop participants. The responses were funny, inspiring, revealing and always a great read. The archive of 2015's interviews can be found here and the 2016 archive is here. Thanks to all who took part!

This month, our Little Interview features artist Siobhan McGibbon, whose work is on display as part of the exhibition Gut Instinct.

Siobhan McGibbon: March 2017

What are you reading?
I'm doing my PhD at the moment so i'm reading a couple of books at the same time. I'm currently obsessed with the writings of Donna Haraway. I'm reading her book Staying with the trouble, making kin in the Chthulucene. I'm reading a couple of Sci-fi related texts such as Science Fiction and the Prediction of the Future: Essays on Foresight and Fallacy.

Favourite museum?
It would have to be The Mutter Museum of the college of physicians in Philadelphia. I was a research fellow there in 2014, the museum houses the most amazing collection of medical abnormalities and the most beautiful collection of historical medical texts. They have a huge preserved pathological enlarged colon that will imprint itself on your mind for eternity. Google it! I dare you!

Best performance?
I'm finding this one really difficult. So, I'm going to answer it my own way. I was lucky enough to take part in a performance called Heteratropic Glitch by Aideen Barry and Ann Ffrench in Kinsale and in Carrick on Shannon. We wore red ball gowns and danced in inflatable balls on the water. It was might craic altogether and the best performance i've been involved in.

What is your most treasured possession?
Two little wooden elephants that my father gave me when i was a child.

What work(s) of art inspire you?
I went to see Robert Gober's The heart is not a metaphor in MOMA in 2014. The wallpapered rooms created such an immersive experience. I didn't want to leave. His work took my breath away. I wanted to leave New York the minute i left the building and get straight into the studio.

A lightbulb moment?
Well my most recent light build moment was when i saw a meme that explained that those foil Chinese take away boxes unfold to make a plate!

Guilty pleasure?
O gosh! Watching First Dates, i'm a sucker for love.

What would you like to be doing right now?
I would like to be surrounded by many beautiful fluffy cats and lulled to sleep by the sound of purring.
