The GLUCKSMAN Little Interview

Every month we ask the same set of questions to someone collaborating with us. Over the last two years, we have interviewed diverse members of the Glucksman community - artists, academics, staff members, guests, audiences and workshop participants. The responses were funny, inspiring, revealing and always a great read. The archive of 2015's interviews can be found here and the 2016 archive is here. Thanks to all who took part!

This month, our Little Interview features academic Professor Nuala Finnegan, Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, whose research shaped the current exhibition Outposts: Global borders and national boundaries.

Nuala Finnegan: January 2018

What are you reading?
Reading or rather re-reading Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway.

Favourite museum?
National Museum of Anthropology, Mexico City: to be confronted by the force and richness of so many different civilizations is overwhelming.

Best performance?
Not the best, but certainly the most memorable: Dial M for Murder by the Druid Theatre in Galway some time in the late 1970s. It was my first time being immersed in a real theatre experience. Mesmerising.

What is your most treasured possession?
My most treasured possession is a simple necklace belonging to my Mum.

What work(s) of art inspire you?
The first works of art that I truly came to love were those by the Spanish Baroque painter, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo at the Museo Nacional del Prado museum in Madrid where I lived for a year.

A lightbulb moment?
Realising that I could function completely independently in another language.

Guilty pleasure?
Pride and Prejudice box set from the mid-1990s. Or any Jane Austen on screen.

What would you like to be doing right now?
Walking on the beach, any beach, but preferably one with crashing waves..
