The GLUCKSMAN Little Interview

Every month we ask the same set of questions to someone collaborating with us. Over the last two years, we have interviewed diverse members of the Glucksman community - artists, academics, staff members, guests, audiences and workshop participants. The responses were funny, inspiring, revealing and always a great read. The archive of 2015's interviews can be found here and the 2016 archive is here. Thanks to all who took part!

This month, our Little Interview features artist Sonia Shiel, whose work is shown as part Double Take: Collections and Context.

Sonia Shiel: April 2018

What are you reading?
Sam Shepard's family plays - Burried Child, (home and dispossession, guilt, love and loneliness.) "You can't force a thing to grow. You can't interfere with it. It's all hidden. It's all unseen. You just gotta wait til it pops up out of the ground. Tiny little shoot. Tiny little white shoot. All hairy and fragile. Strong enough. Strong enough to break the earth even. It's a miracle."

Favourite museum?
Any with portraits, faces and expressions from all of time.

Best performance?
Performance artist Shana Moulton and composer Nick Hallett collaborating on the opera "Whispering Pines 10," in a one-act production at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, 2014. Moulton’s video imagery and wordless movements are synchronized with Hallett’s original operatic score and libretto in a form of dynamic live animation.

What is your most treasured possession?
My good glass cupboard, home to everything special - including my grandmother's shopping basket and my daughter's monster head, created age 5.

What work(s) of art inspire you?
Io by Correggio, where fog and lust boldly take form.

A lightbulb moment?
The Glucksman want me to answer a questionaire - I'm lucky it's not a video.

Guilty pleasure?
When baking, preparing a little extra, just to scoop the bowl.

What would you like to be doing right now?
Watching over a herd of alpacas, and knowing each by name.!
