Laureate na nÓg Eoin Colfer initiated Once upon a Place to bring stories to children all over Ireland with a special emphasis on fantastic places: extraordinary settings in which to stage very special and memorable storytelling events that will spark children’s imaginations and bring the magic of story and of books to young people in an experiential way. Eoin invited proposals from individuals and organisations interested in working with him on the Once upon a Place programme, and fortunately, the Glucksman was selected!

On March 10th, Eoin will give a private reading in the Glucksman to Cork school and community groups who have created artworks that reflect their own sense of place.

Over the past two months the Glucksman has worked with Children living in Direct Provision centres in Cork City, Wallaroo Playschool and Gaelscoil Mhainistir Na Corann, Midleton to create artworks that consider the idea of place both imaginative and real. An exhibition of the created work will be open the public from 11th to 13th March and will see Gallery 1 transformed into a magical space as imagined by these children.

The gallery will also be showcasing a selection of artworks from school groups who visited the gallery in the past three months to take part in special Once Upon a Place workshops. The artworks from these sessions are realised in a variety of mediums from animation, sculpture, bookmaking, painting, printmaking and drawing. Throughout the weekend we invite visitors to reflect on the results of the creative talents of these young artists and make their own artworks in a series of free art workshops.

The artworks on display were created by children in Direct Provision centres in Cork City; Wallaroo Playschool; Gaelscoil Mhainistir Na Corann, Midleton; Newmarket Girls National School; Gaelscoil Ui Drisceoil, Glanmire; Owenabue Brownies, Carrigaline, and participants from the gallery’s Family Sunday programme.

Laureate na nÓg is an initiative of the Arts Council with the support of The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Children's Books Ireland, Poetry Ireland and The Arts Council of Northern Ireland. The programme is administered by Children’s Books Ireland.
