Art & Ideas: 2116

The Art & Ideas series explores issues and themes from the current exhibition in relation to the experience and approaches of our professional peers in the artworld. Each season, we invite a distinguished guest speaker to share their ideas about art, curating and exhibition making.

This May, we are delighted to collaborate with CorkDFAS to present a lecture by
Dr. Marie Bourke, former Keeper and Head of Education at the National Gallery of Ireland.

Artists' Impressions of 1916 and the Emergence of an Independent Ireland

See how artists have interpreted the Easter Rising 1916, World War 1 and subsequent events in paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture. The focuse of this talk is the period 1900-1927 when artists and writers involved in the Celtic Revival were drawn to depict the Easter Rising and emergence of an Independent Ireland in their own distinctive way. Featured will be well-known artists including Sean Keating, William Orpen, Patrick Tuohy, Grace Gifford, Jack B. Yeats, Kathleen Fox and John Lavery. The images have been sourced from private and public collections including the Military Archives, National Gallery of Ireland, Pearse Museum and National Museum of Ireland.
